What Are Stretch Marks and Why Do They Form?

Stretch marks — medically called striae — form when skin is stretched rapidly over a short period of time. This happens most commonly during:

  • Pregnancy — abdominal skin stretching rapidly
  • Rapid weight gain or loss — skin unable to keep pace with body change
  • Growth spurts in teenagers — especially on thighs, hips, and upper arms
  • Bodybuilding — rapid muscle mass increase
  • Long-term steroid use — can thin the skin and make it more vulnerable

When skin stretches too quickly, the collagen and elastin fibres in the deeper skin layer tear. The body heals these tears — but the healing is imperfect, leaving the characteristic streaky marks.

Fresh stretch marks are typically red, pink, or purple. Over time they fade to silver or white — but they rarely disappear completely on their own.

Stretch Mark Treatment Options at Shakambarri, Kharadi

Microneedling — for all stretch mark types

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in and around the stretch mark — stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. Over a course of sessions, the marks become less visible, the texture improves, and the surrounding skin quality improves.

RF Radiofrequency — for deeper marks

The RF radiofrequency system delivers heat energy into the deeper layer of the stretch mark — stimulating collagen remodelling from within. Particularly effective for deeper, older white stretch marks that have fully matured.

Fractional Skin Resurfacing — for surface texture

Fractional laser treatment addresses the surface texture and discolouration of stretch marks — especially effective on newer red or pink stretch marks where the surface colour is still present.

Combination Approach

For most patients, the best results come from combining two or more of the above — tailored to the age and appearance of the stretch marks. Dr. Ingale recommends the right combination at consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No treatment can completely remove stretch marks — but significant improvement in their appearance is achievable. Newer, red or pink marks respond better than old white marks. Most patients see a 40–70% improvement after a full course of treatment.

Typically 4–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The number depends on the age, depth, and extent of the stretch marks.
Treatment is not performed during pregnancy. Post-pregnancy treatment can begin after the skin has stabilised — Dr. Ingale will advise the right time to start based on your individual situation.
Oils and creams can improve skin hydration and may help prevent new stretch marks from forming. However, they cannot reach the deeper layer where stretch marks actually sit — so their effect on existing marks is very limited.
